Project General Description

This project is part of a solidarity approach and consists of providing emergency aid to improve the living conditions and livelihoods of people affected by the humanitarian crisis in Burkina Faso. Indeed, the humanitarian situation in the country has deteriorated significantly over the last 18 months due to terrorist attacks which have caused massive population movements. Insecurity currently affects more than 1,000,000 people (85% of whom are women and children) and the possibilities for the return of displaced populations are still very low. Women face increased risks of gender-based violence (GBV). Despite the efforts made by the Government and humanitarian partners, needs are still growing, hence the initiative of this project, which aims to contribute to the care of IDPs and vulnerable host communities. Three (03) areas of intervention have been selected for this project, namely: i) food assistance; ii) the provision of shelter and survival equipment; iii) access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation. The Bank Group's contribution to the humanitarian assistance to the Government will be Five hundred thousand United States dollars (US$ 500,000) net of taxes, in the form of a grant from the Special Relief Fund. In view of the implementation timeframe and in order to ensure the desired effectiveness, this amount will mainly finance the acquisition of cereals, shelters, bedding and the construction of water points.

Project Objectives

The general objective of the IDP project is to contribute to improving the living conditions and resilience of IDPs in the Centre-North and North regions. More specifically, it aims to reduce the vulnerability of IDPs to the multiple climatic, security, environmental and socio-economic stresses that keep the Sahelian populations in conditions of aggravating precariousness.

Beneficiaries

The project mainly benefits IDPs and host populations in the North and North-Central regions who are victims of the adverse consequences of the terrorist attacks. The project will finance the acquisition of 500 tonnes of cereals to support the food needs of at least 40,000 IDPs (85% women and children). The project will finance the construction of 300 shelters (mainly female-headed households), representing 6% of current needs. In addition, 1,000 IDP households (100% of households headed by women) will be provided with mats and blankets, mainly for children and the elderly, who are very vulnerable due to the bad weather (harmattan and floods) affecting the regions concerned. The project will finance the construction of 5 positive boreholes to facilitate access to drinking water for IDPs. In addition, 500 households will receive a supply of soap and other hygiene products (such as sanitary towels) for personal and clothing hygiene.
