Project General Description

The present operation was designed to contribute to the efforts of the Government of Burkina Faso and its partners to alleviate the suffering of the people affected by the floods caused by the torrential rain that fell in the night of August 31st to September 1st, 2009 on the central region. This rain fell on the capital, Ouagadougou, and several other regions, causing floods that caused loss of life and material damage. Thus, the situation requires a rapid response to support the government's efforts to provide housing for the affected populations and to repair the vital infrastructure destroyed by the floods. The proposed Bank Group contribution to the financing of the operation amounts to US $ 1,000,000 in the form of a grant from the Special Relief Fund (SSF). This contribution should be used to finance three (3) components, namely: (i) the viabilisation of reception sites and their sanitation: tents, drinking water supply, latrines, sanitary products; (ii) the supply of survival equipment: medicines, mats, blankets, impregnated mosquito nets, seals, etc .; and (iii) the rehabilitation of the Sogpélcé crossing bridge in the Boulmiougou Commune at Sector 19.

Project Objectives

The objective of this operation is to provide emergency financial assistance to help solve the problem of the viability of the sites and the rapid rehabilitation of vital infrastructures. The Bank's contribution should help to immediately protect people from the risks of epidemics in housing sites, to restore decayed essential infrastructure, to save thousands of lives and to make homeless families and open up schools before the opening of classes on 1 October 2009.

Beneficiaries

The main beneficiaries of the operation are the populations of the areas affected by the torrential rain, ie 150,000 people.
