The present intervention focuses on emergency humanitarian assistance to Goma populations affected by the Nyiragongo volcanic eruption. It’s initiated because of the damage caused by the phenomenon. Indeed, on January 17, 2002, the eruption of Nyiragongo volcano resulted very quickly in the formation of three lava flows, two towards the south of Goma and a third towards the south-west towards the town of Sake, on the axis of Bukavu. This volcanic eruption was followed by numerous earthquakes that opened other satellite craters near Goma, creating new lava flows. In response, an operation to fund the Bank Group Emergency Relief Fund for the Education Sector Rehabilitation Program was proposed. To reach the goal of returning to school for all the children affected by the disaster, the program was divided into two phases: the first, which began at the end of January, concerns urgent measures for the temporary rehabilitation of classrooms and provision of basic education kits to allow easy recovery. The second phase is intended for the reconstruction of destroyed primary schools and the acquisition of furniture, materials and school books.
The objective of this program is to return all affected children back to school, with priority given to primary school children who have lost their school and welcomed in schools that are still functioning.
he main beneficiaries of the intervention are children, from the primary cycle, affected.
