The Brazzaville and Pointe Noire Sanitation Project addresses a major concern aimed at strengthening access to sanitation and promoting hygiene and Government’s intention to ensure sustainable and equitable human development, and enhance the people’s living condition. It stems from the Brazzaville and Pointe Noire Drinking Water and Sanitation Rehabilitation Study financed in 2007 by the African Water Facility (AWF). The project should contribute to the development of sanitation infrastructure and an overhaul of the sanitation sector and strengthen Government and donors’ action in the water supply sub-sector. The project should help: (i) improve sustainable access to sanitation; (ii) improve health conditions and hygiene-related behaviour; and (iii) protect the environment from pollution. The project is estimated to cost UA 21 million, net of taxes, including physical and financial contingencies. The project comprises four (4) components: (A) sanitation infrastructure development; (B) development of IEC programmes, studies and works monitoring, and supervision; (C) institution building; and (D) support to the Project Implementation Unit.
The project's goal is to ensure sustainable access to water and sanitation to improve the socioeconomic and health conditions of Congo’s population. Its objective is to contribute to increasing sanitation infrastructure and improving hygiene in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire.
The project cover the cities of Brazzaville and Pointe Noire. About 100,000 additional persons should be served by family latrines in the two cities and 700,000 should benefit from stormwater drainage facilities in Pointe Noire. The combined 1.9 million population of both cities should benefit from IEC campaigns, public latrines and excreta treatment plants.
