Project General Description

The present studies consist of the preparation of drinking water supply and sanitation system feasibility files (SAEPA) in five semi-urban centers (CSU) and the development of tools for strengthening the operational capacities of the Water Sector Development Fund (FDSE) to provide a sustainable funding tool for achievements in the RWSS sector. These five CSUs are Bouansa, Makabana, Boundji, Mouyondzi and Kidamba. This project was initiated in view of the low rate of access of the population to drinking water and sanitation services, health and environmental problems that are acute in these centers, from the constraint of the lack of feasibility files and the classification of Congo in a fragile African country. In addition, these studies should contribute to green growth in Congo by preparing feasibility projects for the construction of sustainable infrastructure, better management of natural resources and strengthening the resilience of households and economic activities in the face of climate shocks. They should be executed, over a period of 24 months, in three consecutive phases: i) establishment of the strategic plans for RWSS; ii) drafting of preliminary designs and feasibility study; and iii) detailed pre-project studies.

Project Objectives

The long-term goal of the project is to contribute to the provision of sustainable drinking water and sanitation services in five CSUs by 2025, with the intermediate objective of achieving the MDGs for water and sanitation by 2015. The objective of the study is to provide the Government with the corresponding project preparation documents, developed at the detailed design level.

Beneficiaries

The immediate final beneficiaries are the Government and the municipalities of the five Center Semi-Urbain (CSU) and potentially, the populations of the 5 CSUs (estimated at more than 35 000) that are selected for this project.
