Structured as a public-private partnership (PPP), the programme will be executed in 3 phases: (i) Phase 1 comprises the exploration of the Lake Assal geothermal vapour field and confirmation of the characteristics of the field’s geothermal resources; (ii) Phase 2 involves the development of the geothermal field and construction of a geothermal power station with an installed capacity of 20 MW; and (iii) Phase 3 will involve expanding the capacity of the geothermal power station to 50 MW. This second phase of geothermal development comes after a first phase that opens the way for the participation of the private sector.
