The present intervention concerns El Achir New Tunnel Construction Project. This project meets the requirements of the modern track on a new site with correction of the alignment. It involves the construction of a new pass crossing structure and the removal of the bottleneck created by the passage of the old tunnel. It should thus contribute to the upgrading of the transport sector. The expected results are: a 5,225ml double-track tunnel, a 25ml span rail bridge, a 7.6km long railway superstructure outside the tunnel. It also contributes to the establishment of a progressive development as part of the modernisation of the national network and the increase in existing capacity, which is the priority of the rail sector, and as part of the prospects for the development of international traffic (trans-Maghreb). The project has two main components, namely: (i) civil engineering works and (ii) control and supervision of the works.
The project contributes to meeting the demand for rail transport of people and goods across the country. In particular, it aims to: (i) eliminate the threat of traffic disruption through the collapse of the existing tunnel in El Achir; (ii) remove the current bottleneck in the passage to El Achir for rail operations; and (iii) ensure the safe and regular transport of goods and passengers.
The main beneficiaries of the project are economic operators and individuals throughout Algeria with a certain emphasis on the region's economy.
