Gabal El-Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant (GAWWTP) - Stage II, Phase II Project is a part of the investment programme aimed at addressing the national issues of public health and environmental protection, including the protection of Egypt’s finite water resources. The main project’s output will be a 500,000 m3/d primary and secondary wastewater treatment capacity added to the existing GAWWTP. The cost of putting up this additional treatment capacity is estimated as Euro 233.5 million. The main direct impacts of this will be improved public health and a cleaner environment. It will contribute towards the attainment of the government’s goal and consequently boost socioeconomic development. This project consists of three (03) components, namely: 1) wastewater treatment expansion works; 2) institutional support and sanitation & hygiene promotion; and 3) engineering services (for project management).
The project objective is to improve the quality of wastewater discharged into the drainage system in Cairo East, thereby contributing to increased coverage of improved sanitation and clean environment for the nearly 8 million people living in this area. The project entails construction of the next phase of GAWWTP (Stage II Phase II). This phase will provide an additional wastewater treatment capacity of 500,000 m3/d.
The beneficiaries of the project are the populations of 8 million living within the catchment of the of GAWWTP and estimated more than 785,800 living downstream of the plant.
