Abu Qir project aims to increase the installed power generation capacity in Egypt by 1300 MW, to become available to the national grid in 2012, thus increasing the grid capacity by 4%. The project is part of the 2007 – 2012 power sector investment plan to increase power supply in order to accommodate the expected growth in the demand. This Abu Qir power plant project (with a total capacity of 1300 MW) represents 18.6% of the targeted capacity increase in the Egypt expansion plan. Demand for electricity has been growing steadily in Egypt at about 7% per year as a result of economic and demographic growths. With universal access to electricity throughout the country through the national grid, electrification plays a significant role in supporting socio-economic development and service delivery. The project main components comprises: (A) Civil Works; (B) Supply and Installation of Equipment: (B.1) Steam Turbine Generators & Condensers, (B.2) Steam Generators & Auxiliaries, (B.3) Mechanical Equipment/Pipe Installation, (B.4) Electrical Equipment/Instrument & Control Installation, and (B.5) 500 kV Switchyard; (C) Environmental Monitoring; (D) Project Management; and (E) Wrap-up Insurance.
