Project General Description

The present support Women’s Economic Empowerment Project (WEEP) is designed to support women’s economic empowerment in the New Lands through supporting institutions in delivering a gender sensitive social development services. This support should be done through supply of credit to women; training and capacity building; creation of women owned businesses and group enterprises. The project is to address the many challenges of a large and increasing population, rising unemployment and poverty, and constrained economic development facing the people, especially women, newly graduates, farmers and landless people of New lands. The project comprises the five components namely: (1) Institutional Development in the form of training of officers of the National Program and later Principal Bank for Development and Agricultural Credit (PBDAC); (2) Entrepreneurship and Leadership Development; (3) Credit Fund comprising of financial services and credit promotion activities; (4) Social Development including general social and environmental sensitization, gender training, support to nurseries and health centers in the project areas, literacy training ; and (5) Strengthening of the PIU including training, equipment and study tours.

Project Objectives

The objective of the project is to support women's economic empowerment in the new lands.

Beneficiaries

Direct project beneficiaries are poor women living in the seven (7) New Lands Zones; indirect beneficiaries include the families of the women and the communities in which they live.
