The Social Fund for Development (SFD) Phase II project was initiated for poverty reduction and job creation especially for the population with limited income and low standard of living. The first phase of SFD successfully ended in 1995 and SFD has since become the main funding vehicle for channeling government and donor resources to the poor, and remains relevant to donors as an umbrella funding mechanism for their poverty reduction and job creation programs. The project should also created jobs and improved the income of thousands of families. The project comprises two components: (i) social development activities and (ii) productive (income generating) activities. The social development activities component had two sub-components, namely health sub-component and education & training sub-component. Under the productive (income generating) activities component it's envisaged that the project will support productive family activities through income generating schemes, involving the establishment of small revolving funds for self-help productive activities and related training in management and productive skills.
The sector goal is the reduction of socio-economic imbalances and increase in self-development opportunities. The objectives of the Social Fund for Development (SFD) Second Phase Program is to (a) create jobs through support to small enterprises and labor-intensive works and, (b) support community infrastructure and services in partnership with NGOs and local groups.
The beneficiaries of the project are the poor and economically vulnerable populations of the governorates of Aswan, Qena, Assuit, Beni Suif and Minia.
