With more than 40 percent of its population living in urban areas, Ghana is one of the most urbanized countries in Africa. While complementing the AFD financing, the Bank’s operation will enable GOG toachieve its objective of enhancing urban mobility and improving livelihoods in the projectarea of influence. Furthermore, the Awoshie-Pokuase road links two international roads, the Tema-Ouagadougou-Bamako corridor (UEMOA/Ghana Road Program I financed by the Bank) and the Trans-West African Coastal Highway.
The proposed project seeks to provide integrated solutions to urban development, one of the main challenges for Ghana. It aims at constructing the 15 km long Awoshie-Pokuase Road, secondary roads, and key socioeconomic infrastructure, such as drainage, markets, water supply, schools, health centers and lorry parks. The Awoshie-Pokuase Road is urgently required to improve the mobility and accessibility to the rapidly developing northwestern corridor of Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA). The road has a strategic importance as a potential main artery linking western Accra to northern parts of the city. As such, this road is included in GOG’s Arterial Road Development Programme (ARDP) to improve access to and from the capital city and to enhance productivity, hence contributing to poverty reduction and sustainable economic growth.
The direct project beneficiaries include residents, commuters, traders, vendors, business owners, and communities situated along the 15 km stretch of the Awoshie-Pokuase Road. The total population of the area is estimated at 230,000 inhabitants with a density varying from 24 to 61 inhabitants/ha.
