The Ziwa-Kitale Road Upgranding Project serves one of the most important granary centres of Kenya. The area served by the road is and has high agricultural potential because of the fertility of soil and adequate rainfall. The construction of the project road should therefore facilitate easy and reliable transport for the delivery of farm inputs and evacuation of farm produce to market centres. Its construction should generate savings in vehicle operating cost, minimize maintenance costs and generally improve and consolidate agricultural and industrial activities in the Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia districts of the Rift Valley Province. The project includes: (a) construction works for the upgrading of the two-lane asphalt standard gravel road from south of Ziwa to Kitale (63 km). The works include the extension of the road from Lodwar to Kisumu to form a circular road around Kitale, a 9 km road from counsin's corner to Kipsain, and a 15 km link from Cherengani to me's Bridge.
The objective of the project is to stimulate economic and social activity in the target districts by building all-weather roads that will reduce vehicle operating costs and encourage improved transport services.
The beneficiaries of the project are the populations of the Ziwa-Kitale axis, economic operators and all road users.
