The Murang'a, Kisii and Bungoma Sanitation Project is part of the Government's efforts to develop certain cities. This should make it possible to build a sort of relay center between activities related to the cash economy and those in the agricultural hinterland. The project consists of rehabilitating and extending existing wastewater collection systems and building new wastewater treatment plants to ensure that the three cities have adequate facilities for the collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater until 1995. By having easier access to factors of production and markets, farmers and ranchers will be inclined to produce from a commercial point of view and to become more integrated with the monetary economy. This will require not only improving the roads and transport facilities, but also installing infrastructure such as water and sewer systems in these cities. The components of the project are: (A) land acquisitions; (B) pipes and manholes; (C) treatment plants; (D) emptying vehicles and tools; (E) execution studies and supervision of works.
The overall objective of the project is to improve the health and productivity of the people of Muranga, Kisii and Bungoma. Its specific objective is to provide water-borne sewerage systems for the three rapidly growing municipalities of Bungoma, Kisii and Muranga for the projected waste flows from 1995 populations of these urban centres.
The beneficiaries of the project are the municipal councils of Murang'a, Kisii and Bungoma. These councils have acquired the status of full-fledged municipal councils due to their population growth, the improvement of their public and commercial services, and their industrial development.
