The proposed operation is an ADF additional loan of UA14.0 million to the Republic of Kenya to finance cost overruns and scale up East Africa’s Centres of Excellence for Skills and Tertiary Education in Biomedical Sciences – Phase I Project. The Project is supporting creation of a network of Centers of Excellence (CoEs) in biomedical sciences and engineering - Nephrology and Urology in Kenya and is part of a network of five centres of excellence for Oncology in Uganda, Cardiovascular in Tanzania and Biomedical Engineering, eHealth in Rwanda, nutrition in Burundi. This additional financing will support the Kenyan component of the CoE Project to meet cost overruns and to scale-up physical facilities for the East Africa Kidney Institute (EAKI) in Nephrology and Urology, increasing the equipment scope and enhancing more training for medical personnel required for operationalizing the EAKI to a state-of-the-art specialized medical institution. The project’s main deliverable is to enhance EAC’s competitiveness through a highly skilled workforce in biomedical sciences. The additional funding will expand higher education and specialized service delivery that are demanded by the rapid economic development in the region.
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to development of relevant and highly skilled workforce in biomedical sciences to meet East African Community (EAC) immediate labour market needs and support implementation of EAC’s ‘free’ labour market protocols.
The expanded facilities at EAKI would magnify the capacity of the previous project objectives by providing more treatment areas, diagnostic laboratories, specialized equipment, and more targeted technical personnel trained to run and maintain the equipment. The expanded capacity will enable EAKI to function optimally as a teaching and referral unit. It will enable at least 100 kidney transplants to be undertaken per year, reducing the time for management of each case to 2-3 days. The histocompatibility laboratory will also facilitate other organ transplants in addition to kidney.
