The present intervention focus on the eighth Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Project (DWSS). It aims to enable the Government of Morocco, in the short term, to increase the rural access rate from 55% in 2004 to 92% in 2007. This access rate is beyond the Millennium Development Goals (a halving of the population without access to drinking water). The expected effects of the project are: (1) to meet, from 2008, the increase in the demand for Drinking Water Supply (DWS); (2) to ensure water resources for DWS feeding; (3) to provide drinking water supply for 3 new tourist areas and a new port complex from 2008; (4) to protect the water table that supplies the area from Kenitra to Salé; and (4) to ensure the liquid sanitation of Sidi Taibi for a population. The project consists of the following main components: (i) drinking water supply systems; (ii) purification of wastewater from the center of Sidi Taibi; (iii) acquisition of land necessary for the laying of the pipes; (iv) geotechnical control consisting of laboratory tests; and (v) studies, supervision and control of the works.
The project's sectoral objective is to improve the living conditions of the population through access to drinking water and wastewater treatment. The specific objectives of the project are to ensure a drinking water supply in a sustainable way for several cities (Marrakech, Essaouira-El Jadida, Beni Mellal, Berkane-Saidia and Azemmour), three new tourist areas and the port of Tangier - Mediterranean, to facilitate access to drinking water in unserved rural areas, as well as to improve the health conditions of the population and to ensure the protection and preservation of water resources.
The main beneficiaries of this intervention are areas concerned by the project, namely: the cities of Marrakech, Essaouira-El Jadida, Beni Mellal, Berkane-Saidia and Azemmour; three new tourist areas and the port of Tangier - Mediterranean.
