The Haouz Nappe artificial recharge pilot project from Oued Ghmat, with a total estimated cost of € 2,148,000, aims to improve the living conditions of the people of the Haouz plain by securing the availability of water by the artificial recharge of the aquifer. This pilot project was developed by the Government of Morocco as a major intervention of the Master Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management because of the important economic challenges posed by groundwater in the Haouz plain. It is organized around the following four components: i) Technical, socio-economic and environmental studies, ii) Development works, iii) Monitoring, evaluation and documentation and iv) Project management.
The overall objective of the project is to improve the living conditions of the people of the Haouz plain by securing the availability of water through better use of the artificial recharge of the water table. It aims at the following specific objectives: (i) Improvement of knowledge on the state of the water table and the basin environment, (ii) Improvement of the availability of water by the rise of the water table and (iii) Capitalization of the results of the project.
The beneficiaries of this intervention are the populations living in the plain of Haouz estimated at 1 612 916 people and particularly women; water users (farmers, pastoralists, golf-resorts, hotels), urban agglomerations and villages); political and technical decision makers in the Tensift region and the country; The executives of the ESA and the ABHT.
