Project General Description

The Rural Primary Health Care Strengthening Project (PRSSB) aims to support the Government’s priorities and national health development strategies, including primary health care. This project should help the rural poor, especially women and children, gain access to quality basic health care. It should permit: (a) construction and / or rehabilitation and equipment of hospitals, health centers and housing, (b) acquisition of vehicles, ambulances and motorcycles, and (c) formation of health staff and that of the Equipment and Maintenance Department. The project, to be implemented over a five-year period, has the following four components: i) extension of the primary health care facilities network and construction of doctors’ and nurses’ quarters in rural areas in ten provinces; ii) support to six priority health programmes; iii) strengthening of 10 provincial hospital infrastructure and equipment maintenance units; and iv) project implementation.

Project Objectives

The overall objective of the project is to lend support to the Government in its efforts to gradually institute a general health policy geared towards promoting primary health care (PHC) by expanding Primary Health Care Facilities (PHCF) in landlocked, deprived and inaccessible areas. Specifically, the project aims to: (i) accelerate the promotion of basic health care of rural populations, (ii) support six priority health programs to protect and promote the health of disadvantaged populations, (iii) provide support in the field of equipment maintenance for preventive maintenance of buildings and logistics and in the training of national cadres and traditional birth attendants.
