Project General Description

The present intervention concerns the Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance Project. The project aims to improve the accessibility and mobility of populations in the Provinces of Antananarivo and Mahajanga. It should provide easier access to administrative, health and market centres, reduce transport costs, improve security conditions, increase agricultural production, open up villages in the Mahajanga region, create job opportunities and encourage the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. The project has five components, namely: (i) rehabilitation and periodic maintenance of 268.4 km of paved roads; (ii) rehabilitation and periodic maintenance of 102.2 km of dirt roads; (iii) the rehabilitation of 411 km of service roads; (iv) acquisition of road maintenance equipment and (v) the services of consultants.

Project Objectives

The objectives of the project are: (i) safeguard the main network and rehabilitate service roads to facilitate internal trade, export and ensure food self-sufficiency; (ii) strengthen the capacity of DPW to manage the network; (iii) gradually transfer certain maintenance operations carried out under contract to private companies; (iv) develop the road construction industry by promoting SMEs in the sector.
