Project General Description

The Guelb El Rhein Mine Expansion Project (Guelb II) consists of the construction and commissioning of a new iron ore beneficiation plant to produce an additional 4 million tonnes of concentrates annually (MTPA). This intervention is part of the larger framework of the Guelb II project, which remains the largest industrial project in the history of Mauritania. The Guelb El Rhein mine expansion project is in line with the Bank's private sector operations aimed at assisting domestic enterprises and developing the country's natural resources. The national industrial and mining company named SNIM, a Mauritanian state-owned company, operates the iron ore at the Guelb El Rhein site, located 25 km northeast of Zouerate in the Wilaya of Tiris-Zemmour in the northern part of the country. Mauritania. With the Guelbs II Project, SNIM aims to double the production of this site by 2012.

Project Objectives

The objectives of this project are to modernize SNIM's existing infrastructure and significantly increase production capacity. More specifically, the aim is to increase the production capacity of the Zerouate site, which already has an annual capacity of 12 million tonnes, or four million tonnes of iron ore supplement per year.

Beneficiaries

The main beneficiaries are the Mauritanian Government and the National Industrial and Mining Company (SNIM).
