Project General Description

This project is related to the 2nd tranche of funding for the additional donation of the Nouakchott city “aftout essaheli” drinking water supply project. This project was conceived in order to remedy the problem of water scarcity which suffers the city of Nouakchott and its surroundings and which handicaps the development of the industrial and commercial activities affecting the life and health status of the people. The needs of the latter in water are constantly increasing. They are estimated at more than 100,000 m³/d in 2010, 170,000 m³/d in 2020 and 226,000 m³/d in 2030. These needs can no longer be covered by the production of the only available aquifer of Trarza estimated at 55,000 m³ / day. The Aftout Essahli project is the overall solution for the supply of drinking water to the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, from the Senegal River located nearly 200 km to the south. It involves the execution of three pumping stations with a flow rate of 170,000 m³/d, 160,000 m³/d and 150,000 m³/d, including design, realization, testing, commissioning , semi-industrial walking as well as staff training. Indeed, its dimensioning was realized to produce 170,000 cubic meters per day allowing the satisfaction of the demand by 2020. Provisions are planned to bring this production to 226.000 cubic meters in order to satisfy the demand of the populations of the city until 2030. The project is divided into five lots. The first one concerned pretreatment and treatment works; a second, pumping stations and associated power lines; a third, the pre-treated water supply of Nouakchott; a fourth, by far the most important, dealing with water transfer pipes from pumping stations along the Senegal River to pre-treatment and treatment plants; and the last, the connecting pipe of the processing plant located at PK 17 to the distribution network of the city of Nouakchott.

Project Objectives

At the sector level, the objective of the project is to improve the living conditions of the population by ensuring quality access to drinking water at the national level. More specifically, the project aims to increase coverage of the water requirements of the population of Nouakchott by increasing the daily production of drinking water from 55 000 m3/d in 2007 to 170 000 m3 by the year 2020 and 226 000 m3 by 2030. In addition to the drinking water supply (AEP) of the city of Nouakchott, the project also aims to provide drinking water to rural populations in the areas crossed by the Aftout Essahli pipeline.

Beneficiaries

The targeted beneficiaries are mainly the population of the city of Nouakchott as well as the rural populations of the areas crossed by the driving of Aftout Essahli.
