Project General Description

The proposed project targets smallholder food producers with the aim of improving food security and reducing poverty for the participating households, as well as for the communities residing adjacent to the schemes. The development of irrigation infrastructure will also contribute towards a reduction in the dependence on food imports which has been a drain on foreign currency reserves, posing a significant threat to the ongoing economic reform program of the GoM. Reliable irrigation water supply will also enable the poorer farmers to cultivate high value crops. The project meets the government objective of improving the productivity of smallholder agriculture. The project will also contribute significantly to achieving the Millennium Development Goals of (i) halving the proportion of people living in extreme poverty by 2015, and (ii) promoting gender equality and empowerment of women through their involvement in project activities. The project will be implemented over a period of 6 years.

Project Objectives

The overall sector goal of the project is to contribute to poverty reduction and food security in rural Malawi. The specific objective of the project is to increase productivity and income of rural households in the project area. This will be achieved through the promotion of intensification and diversification of the existing cropping system and improvement of the marketing system which will significantly increase production, productivity and incomes of the small farmer whilst improving household nutrition and environmental management of natural resources at the same time.

Beneficiaries

The estimated total number of beneficiary households is 8756, or a total of 45,531 people.
