The Msulira-Nkhotakota road is an important section of the Mchinji-Kasungu-Msulira-Nkhotakota road corridor. The project consists of: (a) improvement of the existing gravel road between Msulira and Nkhotakota to a bitumen standard road of 6.7m carriageway width with 1.5m shoulders on either side over a total distance of 75km and; (b) design review and the provision of pre-contract services and the supervision of construction. The completion of the section Msulira-Nkhotakota should complete the corridor which serves as an international transit route linking Malawi to Zambia, Zaire and Tanzania. The project should also generate savings in vehicle operating costs, minimize maintenance costs and generally improve and consolidate agricultural activities. In the long run the upgrading of road should facilitate the transport into the area of essential commodities and agricultural inputs and the evacuation of produce.
The objective of the project is to increase transport service levels and road safety by improving road surface conditions so as to reduce vehicle operating costs.
