The proposed project is part of a general programme designed to strengthen, extend and improve primary and secondary education. Appropriate facilities and pedagogical and didactic materials will be made available to 10240 pupils in eight new primary schools with sixteen classes working in double shifts, as well as 16 staff housing units; and 1440 pupils in three secondary school day schools will also benefit from these facilities. In addition, institutional support is planned to improve the management of the education system. The project, which will be implemented over a period of 4-5 years, includes three components : (i) strengthening of the Planning Unit in the Ministry of Education through staff training, supply of computer equipment and one vehicle; (ii) two district education offices constructed, furnished and equipped; (iii)3-week in-service training of 500 primary school teachers; and (iv) 12 person/months technical assistance to strengthen the in-service training system.
The sector objective is to improve the efficacy of the education system in Malawi. The project objective is to enhance access to, and improve the quality of, primary and secondary education in specific densely populated districts located in three regions of Malawi.
The intended beneficiaries were the densely populated (mostly rural) districts of Malawi and the education sector of Malawi. The expected outputs are ten rural primary schools in ten districts constructed, furnished and equipped with textbooks to provide access to 12,800 pupils. It is also expected the construction of three secondary schools, furnished and equipped, one in each of the three regions of Malawi, with each school catering for 480 students.
