The proposed study is designed to address four major areas in the health sector, namely district health care delivery, human resources development, management capacity of the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) and maintenance of health facilities and equipment. The study will form part of the concerted effort by the donor community to provide assistance in order to resuscitate the health sector. It is designed to identify the most appropriate interventions in these areas. A subsequent project will hopefully lead to the Bank’s third intervention in the health sector in Malawi. The study will be carried out in three phases, each ending with an appropriate report to be submitted for the approval of the Government and the ADF.
The overall objective of the pre-investment study is to undertake a comprehensive assessment in the study areas to identify the most appropriate interventions to improve health care delivery in Malawi. The proposed study will assess the health sector requirements in 5 districts (Salima, Ntchisi, Mchinji, Nkhota Kota and Phalombe) as well as the establishment of a nursing and paramedical training school in Mzuzu. It will propose interventions to strengthen the management of the health sector as well as the capacity of the Government to maintain health facilities.
The study will benefit to the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) as well as Salima, Ntchisi, Mchinji, Nkhota Kota and Phalombe districts.
