The New Port of Walvis Bay Container Terminal Project is a port expansion project addresses three key operational priorities of the African Development Bank Decade Strategy (2013-2022): infrastructure development, regional integration and private sector development. The project includes the construction of a new container terminal on the land gained from the sea within the Walvis Bay Channel, supported by complementary logistics and capacity building initiatives. The project will run for three (3) years. The expected results of the project include improving the efficiency of the port and increasing freight volume as a result of increased trade in the region, which will boost inter-regional trade and regional integration, development private sector, job creation and the promotion of inclusion, economic growth and poverty reduction. Project outcomes also include increased opportunities for trade, job creation and capacity building that will promote inclusive growth and economic transformation, thus contributing to the fight against poverty in the SADC region ( Southern African Development Community).
The sector objective of the project is to promote trade and regional integration. The expected long-term impact of the project includes increasing and sustaining trade between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the rest of the world. Specifically, the project aims to increase the capacity and efficiency of the Port of Walvis Bay to meet growing freight demand and is an alternative route to the south-west coast of Africa to serve SADC countries.
The beneficiaries of the project are diverse and include the people and the government of Namibia as well as that of other SADC countries. Trade and logistics industries, consumers and exporters at the national, regional and international levels are also beneficiaries.
