The present intervention is relative to the support to the development of an Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) plan for Namibia. It's designed because of the lack of an over-arching IWRM Plan and strategy. This problem has limited government and partner response to ensure appropriate synergies and coordinated action to address prioritized challenges in the water sector of Namibia. The IWRM plan and its resulting outcome, a prioritized, integrated action plan, should address this lack of coherency to ensure effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability in the development of Namibia according to its Vision 2030. The project should enable Namibia to consolidate its IWRM policies, institutional frameworks legislative and regulatory frameworks and capacity development, as well as prepare strategies, programmes and implementation plans, necessary to attract appropriate national and international investments in the sector. As a result, Namibia should have increased capacity to manage its water resources effectively based on IWRM principles to achieve long term development goals. The project comprises the following components: (i) National Water Development Strategy and Action Plan; (ii) formulation of Information and knowledge system; (iii) formulation of long-term Monitoring and Evaluation Framework; (iv) framework for Institutional and Human Resources Capacity; (v) strategy for Funding the Implementation IWRM Plan; and (vi) launching of an Awareness Creation Campaign on IWRM.
The goal of the project is to enable Namibia to achieve the sustainable management of water resource for the purpose of economic development, improved social well-being and protection of the environment. Its objective is to facilitate the preparation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) plan for a sustainable water resources use and anagement in Namibia.
The Namibian government and people should be the overall beneficiary of the project. It should also benefit to communities and municipalities, NGOs, private sector.
