Project General Description

The First Multi State Water Supply Project will provide a 262,000 m3/d and 126,000 m3/d of potable water supply to the inhabitants of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States respectively up to the year 2005. The project will also provide equipment for National Reference Laboratories to monitor water quality of the country’s water bodies and help maintain international standards of the treated water. The project aims to contribute towards the overall social and economic well being of the Nigerian people, especially the population in the urban centres and small towns in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states by a significant contribution in improving heath, productivity, and support in poverty eradication through the sustainable development and reliable use of WSS facilities. It consists of three sub-components components namely (i) Cross River State Water Supply Sub-Project (CRSWSP) (ii) Akwa Ibom Water Supply Sub Project (AIWSP) and the (iii) Reference and Regional Water Quality Laboratories Sub-Project (Laboratories Project).

Project Objectives

The objectives of the project are: (i) To increase the water supply from 50,000 m3/day to 438,000 m3 /day and sustain the availability of potable water supply to meet the demands in two urban centres with populations estimated at 4.1 million in the target year of 2015 and in ten semi-urban centres with a total population estimated at 2.3 million in the same target year ii) To reorganize and strengthen the Cross River State and the Akwa Ibom State Water Boards so that they can operate autonomously and along commercial lines such that upon the completion of the project they can achieve cost recovery, at least on operations and maintenance costs iii) To establish a network of two National and four Regional Water Quality Reference Laboratories for monitoring the national water bodies as well as to act as references for the national water quality standards.


The beneficiaries of the project are: the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture Water Resources and Rural Development; the water sector; Cross River State Water Board Akwa Ibom Water Company Limited (AIWCL); the population of urban centres and small towns in Akwa Ibom State and Cross River State (estimated at 5.23 million, 80% of them rural).
