The project will support Kwara State Ministry of Health (KWSMoH) effort to complete 8 secondary hospitals in order to provide adequate referral services and specific coverage to population served by PHC in each of the selected LGAs. Each hospital will be built to be fully functional in terms of service areas, equipment, diagnostic services and staffing. The project aims at improving health status of the communities in the Kwara, Kogi and Niger States through a primary health care strategy. The KWSMoH plan calls for strengthening of the PHC system to provide improved quality services at the services at the primary level. To the end, the secondary hospital would be the pivotal point for ensuring that a linkage with the PHC facilities in the catchment area is maintained in terms of an organized referral system, technical and management systems support and the provision of quality clinical supervision and in service training for PHC service providers. The project is comprised of the followings components: I) Completion of eight (8) District General Hospitals; II) Construction of housing for fifty-two (52) Staff Housing at eight Hospitals; III) Establishment of maintenance unit; and IV) Project Implementation Unit. It will be executed in 36 months.
The project aims to improve the quality, effectiveness and use of State and Local health secondary health care facilities with a view to supporting Primary Health Care (PHC) activities in the rural areas. By the end of the project period: 8 district general hospitals and 52 staff housing units rehabilitated and upgraded and expanded in the project sites providing comprehensive primary health care; A central state maintenance unit established; Reduced Infant mortality by 10% from 1991 average; Increased coverage of basic health services coverage by 10%.
The beneficiaries will be the populations in Kwara, Kogi and Niger States whose health status will be improved.
