Project Objectives

The objectives of the proposed study is to carry out a detailed final master plan feasibility study, which will (i) establish a reliable inventory of the peat reserves to form a basis of informa- tion for the future use ; (ii) identify and delineate all the major peatlands by classifying them on the basis of quality and quantity (iii) to select the most promising peatlands and finally (iv) to identify possible project (s) and assess their techno-economic viability. The objective of these projects would be to : a) increase peat fuel production in the country by developing peat reserves in order to partially recuce the import of petroleum products and replace the consuption of firewood and charcoal fuel for domestic and industrial use by dry peat sods and briquets (torblites) or in any other possible forms ; b) eventually promote regional development and increase the con- tribution of the peat sector to the national economy by gene- rating more income, employment and saving foreign exchange and finally ; c) use peatlands unsuitable for commercial peat extraction for agricultural purposes.
