Project General Description

The Gitarama-Ngororero-Mukamira Road Project forms part of the priority road network of Rwanda and constitutes a key link in the Kigali-Gitarama-Mukamira Road. Its rehabilitation features in the Government’s priorities for the development of the Northern Region. The project doesn’t involve the construction of a new road, but rather the improvement of an existing road. Indeed, the Gitarama-Ngororero-Mukamira road, 102.6 km long, has many defects (ravelling, peeling, combing, potholes, subsidence, transversal and longitudinal cracks, distortions and rutting, serrated banks, etc.) with highly unstable embankments and structure of the fill. Furthermore, it has an inadequate drainage system (blocked culverts, ducts or ditches). The main outputs expected from the project are: a) 102.6 km of paved road in good condition, between Gitarama and Mukamira and 76 km of improved feeder roads; b) Putting in place of a road database; c) Equipment for road database, and equipment for laboratory and in-situ testing, procured, put in place and operating; d) Technical and operational capacities of the Roads Department(RD) strengthened and ; e) About 15,000 persons in the project area sensitized about problems relating to road safety, environmental protection, waterborne diseases (diarrhoea and malaria), and STDs including HIV/AIDS.

Project Objectives

The sector goal is to open up the rural areas, promote economic growth and sub-regional integration by improving the level of service of the transport infrastructure. Specifically, the project aims at: (i) improving the living conditions of the rural communities of the Gitarama and Gisenyi Provinces with the opening up of the agropastoral and industrial areas; and (ii) building of technical and institutional capacities of the Roads Department.
