The Kigali’s Second Water Supply Project involves the construction of structures for water catchment, supply, treatment, storage and distribution in the entire Kigali township. The project involves improvement of the production, extension to the KIMISAGARA treatment station (1000/m3/h) building of 5 new reservoirs (2700 m3), development of 5 existing resources, supply and laying of transmission, and distribution mains, carrying out of 1000 connections and construction of 3500 km access roads for pipe lines repairs. Its implementation will help increase the production of potable water and meet the requirements growth in the short-term, that is 1990-92. The project will improve the operation and safety of the existing infrastructures.
The aim of the project is to increase potable water production in the short-term and to meet the requirements up to 1990-1992, making optimum use of resources already tapped. The implementation of the project will make it possible to strengthen and improve the functioning of the existing distribution and storage facilities and to make potable water available to the entire population of 283,000 inhabitants in 1990, while improving sanitary conditions.
The project beneficiary is the entire urban population of Kigali, who will have access to drinking water and will be assisted in planning urgent actions for wastewater disposal.
