The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project covers five rural districts selected from the Northern, Southern and Central regions of Sierra Leone. The project also includes the development of a comprehensive national programme for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation in the areas of infrastructure, construction and rehabilitation of new water points and institutional toilets, use of appropriate technologies in riverine areas and capacity building.
The project’s objective is to increase sustainable access to safe water and basic sanitation in rural areas, and develop a comprehensive national framework for rural water supply and sanitation investments. An estimated 42,860 households (HHs) will be enabled to improve hygiene and sanitation habits, of which at least 22,700 HHs (160,000 people) will gain access to improved sanitation facilities, thereby significantly reducing water borne diseases. Access to improved sanitation will also benefit 91,000 school children.
The project will directly benefit an estimated 625,000 people (47% women), who will be provided with access to safe water, including restoring access for 361,000 which will be an increase from 40% to 49%.
