The proposed project is part of the Government’s National Development plan (1974-1979) designed to improve the quality and relevance of primary school education particularly as this relates to modernizing school Curriculum to meet the requirements of rural development. The project, which essentially consists of expanding and modernizing the Bunumbu Teachers' College, will support the Government of Sierra Leone in its efforts to improve primary education and adapt it to the country's needs. The Bunumbu Teachers College and the twenty pilot schools within the vicinity of the college will act as the first phase in the introduction and development of rurally biased curriculum. The project focuses mainly on training teachers who will be responsible for implementing the new school curricula and who will be called upon to play a role in facilitating and coordinating community activities in rural areas.
The project will assist the Government in its effort to improve the quality and relevance of primary school education in the rural areas through the training of primary teachers oriented towards the problems of children and youth in rural areas and community development. It provides for the replacement of unsatisfactory existing buildings and for additional facilities to increase the enrollment capacity of the Bunumbu teachers College to 500.
The beneficiaries of the project are: the Government of Sierra Leone, teachers from the Bunumbu Teacher Training College and rural communities in Bunumbu and the country's eastern province.
