The project consists of $ 500,000 in emergency assistance to support efforts to contain a possible spread of bird flu in Togo. This support, which complements the funding of the Avian Influenza Emergency Plan, will be used to improve the preparedness of seven West African countries in the event of an epidemic and to strengthen their capacity to maintain functional laboratories and develop long-term strategic plans and programs for pandemic control. It comprises two components covering human and animal health. The animal health component is funded by a lump sum of US $ 300,000. It includes awareness and information dissemination campaigns for farmers, the supply of chemicals and poultry activities to combat the spread of the disease, in the event of an epidemic. It will also include a provision of protective clothing for veterinary personnel and the purchase of vaccines. The Human Health component will receive a lump sum of US $ 200,000. Activities are mainly focused on strengthening surveillance and diagnostic capabilities.
The main objective of the proposed emergency humanitarian aid program is to help combat the spread of avian influenza in the Republic of Togo in 2006.
The beneficiaries are the Togolese government and the people.
