The project " Des toilettes pour tous à Sokodé par la valorisation des boues de vidange et le micro-crédit (Toilets for all in Sokodé through sewage sludge valorization and micro-credit)" was conceived because of the problems deriving from the insufficient sanitation and lack of hygiene suffered by the urban commune of Sokodé, 3rd largest city in Togo by population (about 100'500 inhabitants in 2012). The project aims, in the long term, to provide all households in Sokodé with access to toilets and sustainable management of sewage sludge through capacity building for the town hall, innovative technologies for the storage, collection and transport, treatment and recycling of sewage sludge, the contracting of community-based micro-enterprises, and micro-financing mechanisms run by women. The total duration of the project is estimated at 36 months. The total cost is estimated at 1,544,700 Euros, of which 1,150,000 Euros will come from the African Water Facility (AWF). The project consists of 4 components, namely (i) Facilitation of household access to toilets; (ii) Sustainable restoration of the sewage sludge collection and transport service; (iii) Treatment and reuse of sewage sludge; and (iv) Project management and information capitalisation.
The objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the environment and the living conditions of the populations of the town of Sokodé as well as those of the surrounding communes through a sustainable management of the sewage sludge industry.
The project will benefit the people of Sokodé, the five neighbouring communes (Tchamba, Sotouboua, Bassar, Bafilo and Blitta), farmers, the community enterprises involved in its implementation, the town hall and the deconcentrated structures of the State.
