The Natural Gas Transmission and Distribution Network Development Project is in line with the 2009-2016 Natural Gas Transmission and Distribution Master Plan. This project is one of the responses to Tunisia’s current problems because concerns the inhabitants of the disadvantaged areas of the country’s west region. It aims to connect 19 municipalities of this region to the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Corporation (STEG) natural gas supply system through the construction of 260 km of transmission network and 404 km of distribution network. Small and medium-sized industries, the tertiary sector and households in the project area will therefore have access to more affordable and less polluting fuel. The project will be implemented over a 5-year period, from 2015 to 2019. The project consists of four (04) components, namely: (1) gas transmission network comprising the construction of the transmission network; (2) gas distribution network comprising: i) construction of the main distribution network; and ii) installation of connections; (3) environmental and social mitigation measures relating to the acquisition of land, compensation and damages for agricultural losses and other ESMP costs as well as (4) PMU operating costs and works inspection and supervision.
The project’s overall goal is to develop the natural gas transmission and distribution network in the disadvantaged areas of the western region, and help to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of 19 municipalities by providing them with reliable and secure access to natural gas. The project’s specific objective is to connect 19 municipalities to the natural gas network, which should provide 13,450 households with access to natural gas.
The main project beneficiaries are: (i) small and medium-sized industries, as well as the tourism sector and households which will benefit from clean and less expensive domestic fuel; and (ii) enterprises which will benefit from supply and works contracts when the project is implemented.
