The project to grant a seventh line of credit of UA 60 million to Economic Development Bank of Tunisia (BDET) is consistent with relations between the Bank and BDET that date back to 1976, when the first line of credit was awarded. This project was identified during the sixth line of credit completion mission to this institution in September 1997. The line of credit is a contribution to the private sector which under the IXth plan (1997-2001) has been earmarked an investment package representing nearly 56% of the gross fixed capital formation planned for the period under review. It is also in line with BDET’s efforts to mobilise resources with a view to attaining the objectives of its programme contract which became effective on 1st January 1997. In the manner of the previous lines, this line will be committed in two years.
The project’s objective is to finance the creation, extension and modernisation of SMEs in all sectors of the economy (industries, tourism, agriculture and other marketing services).
According to estimates, the line of credit will finance about sixty SMEs sub-projects that are economically viable, sound, and environmentally friendly. Most of the sub-projects will be in the industries and tourism sectors which are effective levers for growth, job creation and balance of payments stability.
