The Electricity IV Project will enhance the power's supply to the kilimandjaro and Arusha regions where more rapid developments are evident in Industrial and Commercial Activies; as well as in the production of Agricultural Commodities such as coffee, cotton, sugarcane and sisal. The project will also facilitate the possible interconnection of the Tanzania and Kenyan Electricity Supply Systems. One additional feature of the project is the introduction of Electricity to the rural areas in central and eastern Tanzania thereby (i) relieving the burden of women from hauling water from long distances or spending hours in pouding maize, etc. (ii) encouraging the establishment of small industries (iii) opening up of oppor- tunities for adult education during night classes etc.
The objectives are to: (i) strengthen high voltage grid of Tanzania by extending the North WestNetwork, connecting the existing Singida and Arusha sub-stations with a 220 kV single circuit line to mitigate the acute problem of low voltages, unreliable power supply and severe load shedding in Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions; (ii) meet the suppressed and fast growing demand by providing materials for rehabilitation and extension of Medium Voltage Distribution System, hampered so far by TANESCO’S foreign exchange constraints; and (iii) develop new rural electrification networks in Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions to provide electricity to seven new rural centres and two district headquarters.
The additional supply of power will increase the level of economic activity thereby alleviating poverty, improving quality of life for people and reduce the consumption of fuel wood in the project area.
