Project General Description

The Rural Feeder Road Maintenance Program in Uganda will enhance the capacity OF THE Ministry of Local Government to plan and supervise the overall development and maintenance of the rural feeder roads throughout the country. This will enable the preservation and full exploitation of the past investments made to rehabilitate the Rural Feeder Road. The project will thus facilitate the further exploitation of the agricultural potential and improvement of the social infrastructure in the regions. The main expected results of the project are (i) the maintenance of 2400 km of rehabilitated rural roads, (ii) the routine maintenance of about 2000 km of secondary and priority rural roads, (iii) the periodic maintenance of about 650 km of rehabilitated roads, (iv) the institutional strengthening of the MOLG and the districts through technical assistance and staff training.

Project Objectives

The specific objectives of the proposed project are (i) to preserve the quality of rehabilitated rural roads in the eastern and western regions of the country and to improve access to priority roads, and (ii) to develop sustainable maintenance management capacities for feeder roads in the Ministry of Local Government (MOLG) and district administrations. The sectoral objective is the rehabilitation and maintenance of the feeder road network in the country for its economic development.

The project covers 21 districts in two regions of the country and could have a significant regional socio-economic impact because it directly benefits smallholder farmers.
