The Strengthening of Scientific and Technical Teacher Education Project in Uganda forms part of the recovery programme designed to reinforce and expand technical and vocational education with a view to training skilled workers required by the economy. The project, which was to be implemented over a period of 48 months, comprises 3 components : (i) Rehabilitation of two technical institutions, Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK) and Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo (TEK); (ii) Rehabilitation of Science and Technology Faculties, the Science Education Resource Centre of Makerere University and the preparation of an Action-plan; (iii) Project Implementation Unit - PIU.
The sector goal is to contribute to the improvement of the quality and output of graduates in the technical and scientific fields. The project objectives are to increase, through provision of new facilities, the training capacity of the School of Education at UPK; to improve the quality and relevance of scientific and technical training at UPK, ITEK, Faculties of Science and Technology of Makerere University; and to support the completion of Makerere University Rehabilitation Programme.
The major benefits will be to rehabilitate and increase the training capacity of three (3) tertiary technical institutions with a view to training 100 additional technical teachers and provide additional 2,400 student places each year.
