The Rosso Bridge Construction Project on the border between Senegal and Mauritania should revolutionize day-to-day life of transport operators and inhabitants who live on both banks. The bridge will link the Rosso-Senegal municipality to its twin city Rosso-Mauritania which are separated by the Senegal River, and currently accessible only by ferry. The achievement of this vital infrastructure will also have a great direct impact on the development of Rosso, as part of the financing resources mobilized will be used to modernise the city’s master plan and develop urban and commercial infrastructure such as markets, stations and road networks in addition to the rehabilitation of many health and educational infrastructures, the expansion of drinking water and sanitation networks, waste treatment, and the rehabilitation of the Higher Institute of Tehchnology, which is located in the city. While enabling people's movement 24 hours a day, the bridge will help improve the conditions for crossing and passing through Senegal and Mauritania. This project, with a total cost of XOF 54 billion, has been financed by the African Development Bank up to EUR 44 million. The execution time is planned for 40 months.
The project's overall objective is to contribute to strengthening cooperation and integration in Africa by reducing the missing links of the Trans-African Corridor No. 1 (Cairo-Dakar). In other words, on the one hand, the project should help support growth in the project area and the rapid evolution of commercial traffic between the two countries, while on the other hand support trade growth between the North and West African countries of the region. More specifically, it aims to improve: (i) border crossing conditions between Mauritania and Senegal; (ii) access to basic services, and the living conditions of the populations residing in the project target area, namely Trarza Wilaya (Trarza Region) in Mauritania and the Saint-Louis Region in Senegal.
The project will positively impact the residents of the project area (namely, Trarza Wilaya (Trarza Region in Mauritania and Saint-Louis Region in Senegal), and from now on enable the two peoples of Mauritania and Senegal to freely commute in any season and without any major constraint. With the construction of the bridge, the city of Rosso will benefit from many advantages such as new amenities with the rehabilitation of several schools, the construction of a modern market and a bus station, the construction of 65 km-paved roads and rural access roads to open up rice fields, health infrastructure, etc.
