As part of the development of their Transport Corridors, Burundi and Rwanda have defined a program to facilitate transport on the Mugina-Bujumbura-Nyamitanga-RuhwaNtendezi-Mwityazo-Gisenyi Corridor linking Burundi to Rwanda and to Tanzania. This corridor, which will be implemented in phases, is 497.5 km long, broken down as follows: (i) 330.5 km on the Northern Transport Corridor of Burundi and Rwanda; and (ii) 167 km on the Central Transport Corridor of Burundi. The Nyamitanga-Ruhwa-NtendeziMwityazo road project, which stems from the program, covers: (A) 101 km of road and related works; (B) the removal of impediments to traffic fluidity by building and equipping a Single Border Control Post (SBCP); and (C) capacity building for project executing agencies. The project will be implemented over a period of 48 months (from January 2009 to December 2012). The total tax and duty free (TDF) cost, excluding project expropriations, is estimated at UA 101.28 million.
It is expected that this project will help to strengthen cooperation between the countries of the East African Community (EAC) in general, and between Burundi and Rwanda in particular, as well as increase intracommunity trade. More specifically, the project aims at facilitating the movement of people and goods along the Nyamitanga-Ruhwa-Ntendezi-Mwityazo road, and at improving the living conditions of the populations of the Project Impact Area.
Project beneficiaries are estimated at approximately 3.2 million inhabitants, i.e. 17% of the populations of Burundi and Rwanda. The beneficiaries include the populations within the Project Area (PA) and road users.
