The Ivorian and Malian Governments submitted to the Bank a financing request for supporting the implementation of the Road Upgrading and Transport Facilitation Project on the Corridor Bamako-Zantiébougou-San Pedro. It includes the upgrading and asphalting of the following road sections: (i) in Mali, the road linking Zantiébougou-Kolondieba-Côte d’Ivoire Border (140 km); and (ii) in Côte d'Ivoire, the road section Boundiali-Kani (135 km).
The Project's overall objective is to contribute to the promotion of sub-regional integration within the WAEMU region, and increased trade between Mali and Côte d'Ivoire. The Project's specific objective is to improve traffic flow and reduce transport time and cost on the Bamako-San Pedro Corridor.
Fo the Mali section, the road reaches 21 communities across five municipalities in the Sikasso region, among which Kolondiéba circle (extended ZIP) being the most important city rapidly expanding. Its population is estimated at 202,618 inhabitants, of which 51.5% are women and 48.5% are men. Nearly 60% of the population is less than 30 years-old and hard-hit by unemployment and underemployment due to a mismatch of training skills and job market realities. The Sikasso region is known for its high potential in agriculture, farming and livestock. In Côte d'Ivoire, the road will cross two major districts, the District of Kani (23,684 inhabitants) and the District of Boundiali (163,425 inhabitants), of which women represent 48% of the combined population for these two districts. The project will have a positive impact on local populations in both countries in terms of access to basic social services and reduced cost of inputs as the road will provide a development opportunity for local communities.
