This intervention concerns the Mano River Union Road Development and Transport Facilitation programme (MRU/RDTFP), Phase III. It aims to build resilience at the community and regional levels where inadequate physical infrastructure, particularly in the energy, water, and road sectors. The design of the Programme has taken into consideration the fragility of the region resulting from the protracted civil war which weakened institutional capacity, as well as the high vulnerability of the roads to heavy rains and floods. This Phase 3 of the Programme will consist of: (i) the development and asphalting of: (i) 89 km of road, including 50 km in Liberia and 25 km in Sierra Leone to be upgraded according to ECOWAS standards (7m of pavement and two shoulders of 1.5m each with an asphalt concrete structure); (ii) road studies on 197 km , including 27 km in Guinea, 90km in Sierra Leone and 80 km in Liberia (iii) the construction of a 276 meters bridge over the Makona (Moa) River between Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Strategically, the Programme aims to contribute to the opening up of the interior of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone and to the strengthening of sub-regional integration and trade. Specifically, the Programme will (i) improve the level of service of the Kailahun - Beudu road (25km) on the Kailahun - Koindu corridor in Sierra Leone linking Guinea and Liberia borders including the construction of the peace bridge of 276m on Makona River and Putuken - John Davies Town (50 km) which is on the Fish Town - Zwedru axis in Liberia; (ii) improve safety and crossing conditions of the Makona River (Moa) at the Guinea - Sierra Leone border; (iii) improve accessibility and living conditions of the populations in the Programme's Zone of Direct Influence (PDIA); and (iv) help build the portfolio of future road Programmes (new pipeline) by carrying out road studies.
The main beneficiaries of the program are the populations in the N'Zérékoré Region, particularly the Prefecture of Gueckedou in Guinea, River Gee and Grand Gedeh Counties in Liberia and the Eastern Province, particularly the Kailahun District in Sierra Leone.
