The Trans-National Economic Corridor Construction Project – Phase 1 is designed to stimulate integration and sub-regional cooperation in Central Africa. It contributes to the improvement of the inter-state road transport system and the promotion of intraregional trade in Central and Southern Africa. This will involve improving the level of service of the road transport logistics chain on the Mbuji-Mayi-Kananga-Kalambambuji (DRC)-Chikolondo-Dundo (Angola) road, as well as the living conditions of the inhabitants of the area. The expected outcomes of the project are: (i) improved connectivity; (ii) trade facilitation; and (iii) improved social conditions, social cohesion and life skills. The benefits of the project include: (i) reduced travel time and vehicle maintenance costs; (ii) improved economic potential in the project area; (iii) improved road safety; and (iv) job creation during construction. Building community resilience through regional infrastructure should alleviate long-term pressures and unleash a positive and more inclusive development momentum. The project has three main components, namely: (i) Road and related infrastructure works; (ii) Capacity-building and institutional support for transport and trade facilitation; and (iii) Project management and monitoring.
The development objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the interstate road transport system and the promotion of intra-regional trade in Central and Southern Africa. This will involve improving the level of service of the road transport logistics chain on the Mbuji-Mayi-Kananga-Kalambambuji (DRC)-Chikolondo-Dundo (Angola) road, as well as the living conditions of the inhabitants of the area. Specifically, the project aims to asphalt the Mbuji-Mayi-Kananga-Kalambambuji (DRC) - Shikolondo - Dundo (Angola) road, and to strengthen road transport sector governance in order to achieve regional integration and facilitate trade between the two countries.
The main beneficiaries of the project are the populations of the provinces of the Kasai area (Kasai Oriental, Kasai Central, Kasai, Lomami, Sankuru) and the Angolan province of Lunda Norte.
