Project General Description

The proposed trans-Maghreb railway line, led by the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), is expected to significantly boost regional trade and the economies of the Arab Maghreb Union. The preparation phase of this project, which is the subject of this support, has two main components: the first relates to the technical, economic, financial and socio-environmental feasibility study on: (i) the rehabilitation and modernization of 362 km of railways linking Morocco to Algeria and 503 km of railroad between Algeria and Tunisia, and (ii) the construction of 253 km of new railways with a base speed of 220 km / h to connect Algeria to Tunisia. The second component concerns project management and auditing. It is more specifically the capacity building of the AMU General Secretariat and the accounting and financial audit of the funded activities.

Project Objectives

The main objectives of the project are: (i) improve the interconnection between the railway networks of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia; (ii) reduce costs and travel time on the Casablanca-Algiers-Tunis corridor; (iii) improve the interoperability of rail networks in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia; (iv) promote intermodal transport and intra-community trade in the AMU region; (v) improve the living conditions of the Maghreb populations; (vi) facilitate the free movement of goods, capital and persons between Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, and generally throughout the AMU region.
