The present operation concerns the feasibility study of the Nyimur Multipurpose Water Resources Project which is part of the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) of the Nile Basin Initiative. The Nyimur river valley, located in the Aswa river basin covers just over 31 thousand square kilometres in Northern, Eastern and Northeastern Uganda and in the Magwi county of Easter Equatoria state of South Sudan. The core scheme of the project consists of a 26 m head dam and reservoir on Nyimur River and five (5) modules of irrigated lowland rice of approximately 5,105 ha. A mini hydropower plant with a capacity of 350 kW is included in the dam component. This study will establish a water resources information/knowledge base and institutional development of the target project area. It includes the following three components: (i) Consultancy services for Technical and Economic Feasibility Studies and Tender Design Studies; (ii) Consultancy services for Environmental and Social Impacts Assessment and RAP; and (iii) Project management, communication and consultations.
The principal objective of this project is to sustainably improve both countries’ socio-economic development through water resources development and management for increased water availability for multi usages encompassing: flood mitigation, irrigation, electricity generation, fisheries development, and water supply. The project’s specific objectives are to: (i) complete the technical, economic, financial and institutional feasibility studies of the project so as to ensure its viability; (ii) complete an Environmental and Social Impacts Assessment and a Resettlement Action Plan for the project; (iii) complete the tender design of the project and preparation of tender documentation for its construction; and (iv) mobilize financing from donors for project implementation.
The populations in the Aswa River Basin are the main beneficiaries. At national levels and after construction of the works, the services providers, various consumers of agro-products will also be indirect beneficiaries.
