Project General Description

The so-called "225 kV Guinea-Mali Electricity Interconnection Project" consists of the construction of a 225 kV alternating-current AC power line, approximately 714 km long, between the city Sanankoroba in Mali and Nzérékoré in Guinea (via Fomi in Guinea), with the establishment of the associated processing stations in the localities of Siguiri, Fomi, Kankan, Kérouane, Beyla and N'Zérékoré (in Guinea) then Sanankoroba (in Mali). It aims to facilitate energy management between Guinea and Mali, in order to improve people's consumption in affordable energy. The project should increase the availability of electricity to both countries and strengthen the establishment of the regional electricity market in West Africa, in accordance with the Master Plan adopted in 2012 by ECOWAS Heads of State. The project will contribute to the socioeconomic development of Mali and Guinea through community access to better quality and affordable electricity.

Project Objectives

The main development objective of the Project is to contribute to the strengthening of electricity exchanges between Guinea and Mali in particular, and in general, between the countries of the West African subregion and the socio-economic development of the two countries through increased access of people to quality electricity at a lower cost. More specifically, the project aims to (i) establish the interconnection of the electricity networks of Guinea and Mali, (ii) to reinforce the electricity interconnections under construction in the sub-region as part of the CLSG, OMVS and OMVG and (iii) to promote the connection of households to the electricity grid in the two countries, especially the entire eastern region of Guinea covering Upper Guinea and Guinée Forestière (In addition to connecting the towns of Beyla, Kérouané, Kankan and Siguiri, 121 other localities of 1,000 or more inhabitants will also be connected from Nzérékoré to Siguiri).

Beneficiaries

The project’s direct beneficiaries are future customers of Energie du Mali (EDM-SA) and Electricité de Guinée (EDG) in localities where the line passes in Haute Guinée, Guinée Forestière and the Manding area in Mali as well as all current customers of EDM-SA who will have more reliable and affordable electricity supply through the interconnected power grid. Beneficiaries will also help to strengthen project impact through awareness campaigns to encourage good behaviour by collaborating with EDG and EDM-SA to combat fraud and vandalism on transmission lines.
