Project General Description

The proposed project is related to the follow-up studies for the Organization for the Development of the Gambia River (OMVG) energy project. The project involves four countries: The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal. The project was initiated because of the energy deficit in the region, its high dependence on imported oil, and the use of environmentally harmful hydrocarbons for energy production. OMVG's energy project consists of the following three components: (a) the Sambangalou Dam, (b) the Kaleta Dam and (c) a transmission and interconnection line (Line T) connecting the two dams to the power grids of the four member countries.

Project Objectives

The objectives of the project are to: (i) provide low-cost and renewable energy to four West African countries; (ii) improve the well-being of local populations; (iii) contribute to sub-regional integration and to foster economic development in the sub-region; (iv) significantly reduce the consumption of oil required by thermal power plants, thereby preserving the environment and at the same time strengthening the countries' energy independence.

The final beneficiaries of the project are the populations of four West African countries: The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal.
